| Eminence Independent Schools is an elementary, middle and high school situated on a small, rural campus in Northern Kentucky, sharing a gym, library, art, music and cafeteria facilities. Currently the schools serve a population of 600 students that can be described as rural in the low to middle socio-economic range. Of its population 55% of its students are eligible for free or reduced breakfast or lunch. Almost 20% are identified for special education or speech language services. The schools have a combined attendance rate of 95%, a high school dropout rate of 2.5% and retention rate of 1.9%. Eminence implemented a YRE calendar in 1996. The district spent a year studying the implications of such a change surveyed students, parents and staff. At the time of the change, 75% of their parents were in favor of the new calendar. When last polled 95% indicated they were pleased with a year-round calendar. After implementingYRE, test scores and student grades have risen due to the time provided by intersessions and intersessions have helped reduce the retention rate to less than 2%. Achievement was noted particularly in reading and writing scores. Teachers are reporting more positive attitudes to the new grading periods after the short breaks. They have seen a decline in absenteeism and reporting better grades being achieved by the students. |
